How to Enroll in an Online Course

Enrolling in an online class is easy.

At Illinois, we serve several categories of online learners. Select the student category that you identify with to get started.

Degree-Seeking Student

I am currently enrolled in a campus-based undergraduate degree program and would like to take an online class
OR I am currently enrolled in a campus-based or online graduate degree program and would like to take an online class.

Undergraduate Degree-Seeking Student

(You are currently enrolled in a campus-based undergraduate degree program and would like to take an online class)

  1. Review Online Course Offerings
  2. Contact your academic adviser to review/discuss your online course selection
  3. Know the correct course number and online section number.
  4. Register via Student Self-Service.* (View step-by-step instructions on how to add or drop a class)
  5. Check the Undergraduate Academic Calendar for important enrollment deadlines.

Graduate Degree-Seeking Student

(You are currently enrolled in a campus-based or online graduate degree program)

Non-Degree Seeking Student

I am not currently admitted to a degree program at Illinois and would like to take an online class.

Non-degree registration opens for:

  • Summer 2026 semester – April 20th at 8am CST
  • Fall 2026 semester – July 13th at 8am CST

All non-degree seeking students should register for courses through the non-degree services at the Office of the Registrar

  1. Review Online Course Offerings (Non-degree students may enroll in up to three course sections at a time).
  2. Verify that you have met any prerequisites and review registration policies for non-degree students.
  3. Register via the non-degree registration application.

Note: Courses are subject to change. Please confirm course availability with your academic advisor and/or department.
