Reimagining Education & Communication for Sustainable Futures

The College of Education’s Sustainability Education Graduate Certificate program prepares professionals to become leaders in advancing sustainability solutions through education, communication, and community engagement. Designed for educators, researchers, school administrators, policy makers, and professionals in business, non-profits, and NGOs, the program emphasizes the role of education as a powerful tool for addressing interconnected environmental and social challenges.

Through coursework that explores the social, economic, environmental, and ethical dimensions of sustainability, you will examine how issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and resource use intersect with justice, poverty, equity, and human rights. The program highlights global perspectives, including Indigenous and Global South traditions, and equips you to create educational and communication-based strategies that inspire action across diverse audiences and age groups.

Unlike general environmental education programs, this certificate centers on the human dimensions of sustainability—how communities experience and respond to challenges such as climate change, ecological degradation, and uneven development—and the pedagogical approaches that address them with both urgency and hope. Graduates will be prepared to design, implement, and lead sustainability education initiatives across schools, communities, non-formal learning environments, and organizations committed to building more just and sustainable futures.
